Two officers were injured Tuesday night following an officer-involved shooting near 16th Street and McDowell Road, according to Phoenix Police Sergeant Phil Krynsky.

Krynsky said police were searching for suspects and advised the public to avoid the area. Officers with flashlights stopped and searched vehicles on side streets of a nearby residential neighborhood.

At around 8:55 p.m., Phoenix police said a suspect had been arrested in connection with the shooting.

On X (formerly Twitter), the police confirmed that two police officers had been shot in the line of duty. One of them is in critical condition, the other in stable condition, according to the authority.

According to FlightRadar24, a Phoenix Police helicopter was spotted circling the area around 9:10 p.m. and hovered over the area for nearly three hours.

The police launched an investigation and work continued at the crime scene.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, State Route 51 exits at McDowell Road were closed in both directions due to police presence in the area.

According to ADOT, there were no major route closures related to the closure as of approximately 8 p.m.

Phoenix City Council member Ann O’Brien posted a message about the shooting on social media platform X.

“Two of our officers were shot while responding to a call for help. Don’t worry, the suspects will be found and brought to justice,” O’Brien wrote. “When groups and authorities continue to demonize police across the country, it only serves to embolden criminals. #BackTheBlue”

Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs also posted about the shooting shortly after 9:10 p.m., saying that Arizona Department of Public Safety officials were on hand to assist Phoenix with the investigation.

“I am devastated by this news. My thoughts are with the officers, their families and the entire police community during this time,” Hobbs wrote.
