Former President Donald Trump said he would take a look at the Jeffrey Epstein files and be inclined to release them. “A lot of important people went to that island, but fortunately I wasn’t one of them,” Trump said on the Lex Fridman podcast. The comment came as he discussed his pledge to establish an independent presidential commission on the assassinations that would declassify all documents related to the killing of former President John F. Kennedy.
When asked why Trump had concerns about Epstein, Trump said he never really had any concerns because he wasn’t involved. “He (Epstein) was a good salesman. He was a tough guy. He had some nice assets that he threw around like islands. But a lot of important people went to that island. But fortunately, I wasn’t one of them,” Trump said, adding that the Kennedy files were very different from the Epstein files, but he would be inclined to release the latter as well because he had no problem with it.
Epstein was a New York and Florida-based financier who was on trial for sex trafficking. In 2019, he committed suicide in his prison cell. He was accused of luring minors for sex. Epstein invited high-profile people to his private island and luxury homes. He and his girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell hung out with princes and supermodels. Some big names with close ties to Epstein have come to light, including Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, Stephen Hawking, Michael Jackson, David Copperfield, Leonardi DiCaprio, etc., but they were not accused of any wrongdoing. They were in contact with him.
Trump and Epstein had known each other for a long time
Trump was a friend of Epstein and spoke very positively of him. “I’ve known Jeff for 15 years. A great guy,” Trump told New York Magazine in 2002, before public allegations were made against the multimillionaire and wealth manager. “He’s a lot of fun to be around,” Trump said at the time. “In fact, they say he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.”
But after Epstein’s arrest, Trump said he was not a fan of him and had fallen out with him. This was true, because in 2004 they clashed over a property they both wanted to buy.
