First alert level: High heat and humidity remain persistent

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) – Another initial warning is in effect Thursday as the weather remains hot and humid.

  • Today: Heat index over 100 degrees, poor air quality, few storms
  • Holiday weekend: Isolated thunderstorms, still humid
  • Next week: Pattern change, becomes significantly cooler

Today will be mostly sunny, hot and tropically humid. Afternoon temperatures will climb back up to 35 degrees and the heat index will rise above 38 degrees for several hours this afternoon. There will be one or two cooling thunderstorms in the late afternoon and evening, but not much rain.

The heat index will likely be at or above 100 degrees on Thursday.

The night will be mostly clear, but there may be some fog overnight, with lows of just over 20 degrees.

Tropical humidity will linger through the holiday weekend, but highs will slowly start to drop off a bit as rain chances increase. Highs will be closer to 90 degrees through Friday and stay there through the holiday weekend.

Scattered thunderstorms are likely Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Labor Day, but it doesn’t look like rain showers are on the way, so don’t cancel your outdoor plans. Still, heavy showers are possible each day, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.
