Lions place John Cominsky on the injured list and make two changes to the practice squad

The Detroit Lions announced some expected and one unexpected roster change on Thursday morning.

As expected, John Cominsky was placed on the injured list after suffering a torn medial ligament in training camp a month ago. Since he spent one day on the Lions’ 53-man roster, he can return to the team when he’s ready. Lions general manager Brad Holmes noted that they expect him back at some point.

“We don’t have a crystal ball that can tell us when it’s going to happen, but we’ve had enough conversations to feel comfortable,” Holmes said Thursday. “And we know well enough how the player is going to approach his rehab that we’re confident that hopefully we’ll have him later in the season, probably right when we need him.”

The Lions were unable to immediately fill Cominsky’s spot on the 53-man roster, but it’s safe to assume one of the veterans from the practice squad will get the promotion, possibly nose tackle Kyle Peko, who the Lions will need active in Week 1 as they are shorthanded at the position.

In addition to these moves, the Lions (as previously reported) signed wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones to the practice squad. Despite having an open spot on the practice squad, the Lions had to release a veteran from the practice squad because they had already reached the maximum of six veteran players on the 16-man roster. Safety CJ Moore was the unfortunate player released.

However, if Detroit decides to sign a player from the practice squad to fill the spot on the 53-man roster, it would open up a spot for Moore’s return.

In summary:

  • John Cominsky to IR (to return)
  • Donovan Peoples-Jones joins the training squad
  • CJ Moore released from practice squad
