The New York Giants will be without one of their best players from training camp and the preseason at the start of the 2024 season.
After claiming waivers, the Giants announced that linebacker Dyontae Johnson will begin the season on the reserve/injured list due to the ankle injury he sustained in the season opener.
In a corresponding move, they signed free agent linebacker Curtis Bolton.
Johnson was one of the Giants’ pleasant surprises at the start of training camp. He was called up to the first team in place of the injured Micah McFadden and had a strong performance in the season opener.
However, Johnson suffered an ankle injury and was unable to train for the remainder of the preseason.
Bolton, 28, probably won’t have much to offer on defense. He has played 28 games in his career with the Detroit Lions (2021) and Las Vegas Raiders (2022-2023) without starting.
He has 16 tackles (11 solo) and played 16 snaps on defense in his career. He was a special teams contributor for the Raiders the last two seasons, playing 433 snaps.
The Giants have a small linebacker team behind Bobby Okereke and will have to make do without important reinforcements for at least the first four weeks of the season.
