To provide insight for singles looking for the best states to live in, GOBankingRates analyzed singles’ spending for each state using data from the Missouri Economic and Research Information Center. The analysis covered every fiscal quarter from the first quarter of 2021, when President Joe Biden took office, through the first quarter of 2024.
Here’s a look at the states where the cost of living for single people has improved the most since Biden took office.
North Dakota
If you’re single and looking for a lower cost of living, consider North Dakota. It was the best state for singles during Biden’s presidency. According to GOBankingRates analysis, the average monthly cost of living for a single person has dropped by $119 since the first quarter of 2021.
North Dakota is quite affordable overall. According to RentCafe, the cost of living is about 6% lower than the national average.

Pennsylvania
Just behind North Dakota on the list of best states for singles during Biden’s presidency is Pennsylvania, where the average monthly cost of living for a single person has dropped by $116 since he took office.

Vermont
Another eastern state ranks third in reduced cost of living during Biden’s presidency. The average monthly cost of living in Vermont fell from $1,977 in the first quarter of 2021 to $1,872 in the first quarter of 2024, a savings of $105 per month.
Minnesota
There are several reasons why you should consider Minnesota as a single. GOBankingRates’ analysis found that the average monthly cost of living has dropped by $94 during Biden’s term. Additionally, Spokeo ranked Minnesota among the top 10 states for singles due to factors such as a high percentage of singles.
Delaware
Biden’s home state of Delaware could be a good place for budget-conscious singles. The average monthly cost of living for a single person has dropped by about $77 during Biden’s presidency, making Delaware one of the states with the best improvement in recent years.
Hawaii
You may think Hawaii is a beautiful but expensive state. However, the average cost of living rate for singles in Hawaii has dropped the most at $73. The average cost of living for singles in Hawaii is $2,452 per month.

Rhode Island
When it comes to states for singles, the little one can be mighty. Although the cost of living in Rhode Island is higher than the national average and the state has some of the most expensive cities in the country, the average monthly cost of living for singles has dropped by $69 per month since the first quarter of 2021.
Kansas
If you’re thinking about moving to a Midwestern state, consider Kansas. Since Biden’s presidency, the state ranks eighth for singles, as the average monthly cost of living has dropped by $67. And there’s more good news—Spokeo included Kansas in its list of best states.
Wisconsin
The average monthly cost of living for a single person in Wisconsin decreased by about $67, putting it in a tie with Kansas for eighth place. According to RentCafe, the cost of living in Wisconsin is 2% lower than the national average. Housing is about 11% cheaper than the national average, while basic needs like groceries are about 2% higher.
Oregon
To reach the next state on the GOBankingRates list, you’ll need to head to the Pacific Northwest. Due to a $55 reduction in the average monthly cost of living for singles, Oregon was among the best states for singles during Biden’s presidency.
This drop could be helpful because Oregon is more expensive overall than many other states. In fact, according to RentCafe, the cost of living is about 10% higher than the national average. That’s partly because housing costs in Oregon are 22% higher than the national average.
